Description: G-APIE is the last remaining airworthy Tipsy Belfair (originally designated Tipsy BC). It was originally built by Avions Fairey at Gossellies Belgium in 1948 as batch of 6 airframes to the original pre war 1938 Tipsy BC design, registered as OO-TIE. Sadly the semi elliptical wing was too complex a structure to compete with simpler US derived designs. It is powered by a pre war Walter Mikron 2 engine built in Czech in 1938. The present owner has been custodian for 30 years and has flow most of the aircrafts 2600 total airframe hours. It can carry full fuel (55 ltr) and 160kg pilot and passenger. Stall 35kt, Cruise 90kt land and take off 250m using only 13 litres of fuel per hour. The type set several long distance records in the 1950s. It is delight to fly with very light sensitive controls but is unstable and divergent in all axes and so has to be flown hands on all the time.
