Staggerwings are commonly referred to as the Learjet of the 1930's and have ranked No. 2 in Plane and Pilot's "Most Beautiful Aircraft of all Time" competition (behind the Supermarine Spitfire). This is a pre-war Staggerwing that was originally purchased by Henry DuPont of the IE DuPont Corporation (DE)as his personal aircraft. In 1942 it was impressed into wartime service with the US Army Air Corp as an executive transport. After the war NC2801 continued in civilian commercial service as the very first aircraft to be operated by Ozark Airlines, based in Missouri. Ozark soon replaced its fleet of three Staggerwings with Cessna Bobcats and the airline ultimately grew to a fleet of 50 DC-9/MD-82 aircraft before being bought by TWA in 1986.This aircraft is in a state of "flying restoration". The engine has been upgraded with a Bendix Fuel injection system which provides substantially more power with a lower total fuel burn. The instrument panel has been upgraded for moderate IFR use within Europe. This Staggerwing seats 5 in comfort and cruises at 150knots, burning 50 liters per hour.
