The Auster Mk V is build on the request of the Royal Air Force as an Artillery Observation Post, but also utilized as liaison-, MEDEVAC- and telephone wire laying aircraft. The superstructure is a truss of steel tubes covered with fabric. The maim wing spars are wood, and the the wing ribs are formed aluminum. The wings are also covered with fabric.The pilots seat, -back and -floor was armored with ½" reinforced aluminum, but taken out today to save weight. The planed was /and is today) furnished with a Mk I blind flying panel (same as in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Wellington) and was designed for flying at night, in clods and fog.
